R2E2 proudly participated in the E-Waste Imbizo held on the 21st and 22nd of October 2025,
an initiative hosted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)
in partnership with the Office of the Minister, City of Johannesburg, and City of Ekurhuleni.
This two-day community-driven event aimed to raise awareness about proper e-waste management and
promote sustainable recycling practices across local communities. The first session took place at
the Melbourne Community Centre, followed by the second day at the Rabasoto Community Centre in Tembisa.
Day 1: Melbourne Community Centre
The E-Waste Imbizo kicked off with strong attendance and engagement from the community.
Residents showed great enthusiasm for learning about proper e-waste disposal and the environmental
benefits of recycling electronic materials.
Working alongside our service partner, the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO), R2E2 successfully
collected nearly one tonne of e-waste on the first day. The collaboration demonstrated the effectiveness
of combining education, incentives, and community partnerships to drive meaningful environmental change.
Day 2: Rabasoto Community Centre
The second day saw an even greater turnout from the Tembisa community, whose participation
and support exceeded expectations. Together with ARO, R2E2 achieved a remarkable collection output
of nearly eight tonnes of e-waste in a single day.
To encourage participation, R2E2 offered an incentive rate of R4.50kg and provided
additional rewards for active participants. Shopping vouchers were also awarded to
community members who contributed the largest volumes of e-waste, adding excitement and
appreciation to the initiative.
Commitment to Responsible E-Waste Management
The success of the E-Waste Imbizo underscores R2E2's ongoing commitment to promoting safe,
responsible, and sustainable management of electronic waste in South Africa. By partnering with
organisations such as ARO and engaging directly with local communities, R2E2 continues to advance
its mission to ensure e-waste is collected, treated, and handled in an environmentally responsible manner.
We look forward to participating in future E-Waste Imbizos across the country as part of
our continuous effort to create awareness, encourage participation, and build a cleaner, more
sustainable South Africa.
